Is your lipstick poisning you and your partner???

In a recent FDA report on Lipstick and lead found that most of the 400 lipsticks approved by the FDA tested positive for lead. And according to the independent group – The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics – the world’s largest cosmetics company is putting lead in their goods. Apparently, cosmetics giant L’Oreal has five of the nine highest-leaded lipsticks, the most among the major brand names.

The FDA said in a statement that the levels of lead found were not high enough to raise any health concerns. Still, why accept a toxin like lead in a product as readily ingested as lipstick.

For a better idea of why this is raising concern, please consider: when it comes to American drinking water, 15 parts per billion is the cut off (with a larger goal of keeping it down to nil), and children’s products manufactured in the United States cannot contain any more than 100 parts per million of lead.  The cosmetics industry hopes to alleviate worry by pointing out that unlike water, for instance, lipstick is not intended to be consumed by the user; however, it is likely that throughout the hours of wear, along with the repeated applications, certain amounts of lipstick will be consumed—and when it comes to pregnant mothers, the level of danger is raised even higher

“Lead builds in the body over time, and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant exposure levels,” explains Mark Mitchell, co-chairman for the Environmental Health Task Force for the National Medical Association.

Fixing Your Skin From Within

What you put into your body has a direct effect on your whole body, but mostly you can see it in your complexion, so feed yourself with foods that will help nourish and continue to nurture your skin.

Dry Skin try adding oils to your diet. Foods like wild-caught salmon, walnuts, and flax seed meal can all add hydration and moisture to your skin cell from within.
Tip Eat foods with high water content to reduce surface dryness (Cucumbers, Celery), these foods penetrate cells better then water alone and help strengthen the cell membrane, which plumps skin cell and reduces fine lines
Avoid caffeine and alcohol, both act as a diuretics.

Oily/Acne-Prone Skin Adding probiotics to your diet will help in establishing healthy flora in your body to fight inflammation and reduce acne. Foods high in vitamin A and zinc, like sweet potatoes, will reduce oil production. Avoid dairy products like milk or yogurt, where hormones are used. (Buy hormone free) Probiotic supplements can be used.

Redness try eating foods that can cool your body from within and reduce inflammation. This includes cucumbers and foods that are high in zinc like almonds, chickpeas and shellfish. Avoid “hot” spices like cayenne, and alcohol(which can dehydrate the skin).

Best organic skin care

I am finding that the best organic skin care products are often the simple ones. Basic organic oils such as almond oil, olive oil, avocado oil are tops on my list. I feel organic avocado oil is a must have for great skin care. Avocado oil is my preferred oil because it is lighter than almond oil or olive oil. Being lighter makes it ideal for day time use, as it does not leave an oily sheen on your skin and absorbs rather quickly. I like avocado oil as a night oil too. In order of lightest to heaviest, I find avocado oil is the lightest, almond oil next and olive oil the heaviest of the three. Heavier oils stay on top of the skin the longest leaving the skin very oily looking and also as a night treatment they can get into your pillow cases and sheets etc. and be tough to wash out.

Another thing I have noticed is that combining oils seems to lead to better results in terms of overall skin refinement, like pore refinment and line reduction. I will often use avocado oil for extended periods of time and them switch to almond for awhile. I feel making the switch improves my overall skin texture and appearance. I do not use olive oil very often any more. The heaviness of the oil makes it difficult to use. I am going to start combining oils and see how well they work. I think 70% avocado oil with 20% Almond oil and 10% olive oil would be a good combination. I am going to try sunflower oil soon. I have tried flax seed oil but it will stain clothing so it is not a suitable oil for normal day use but could be good for special treatments. If you have any experience with your own oil skin care recipes let me know what works for you.

Healthy Hands

Hand Care for Smooth Skin Healthy Hands
Our hands are the first to show signs of aging. They are constantly exposed to all sorts of chemicals and elements. Being constantly exposed to the sun everyday can cause a photo-aging effect on our skin. Photo-aging refers to the damage that is done to the skin from prolonged exposure to UV radiation. Examples of photo-aging skin, dark spots, wrinkles, leathery skin, and skin cancer.

Most of us (Men & Woman) spend a great deal of time and money on anti-aging products and treatments for our faces and hair, but do we really take the time to care for our hands?
Here are a few things that we can do to protect our hands.
1. Exfoliate – 1 teaspoon of sugar combined with coconut oil, makes a great one.
2. Sun Screen – Wear Sun Screen all year long, even in the winter months, and make sure its Paba free.
3. Moisturize-Always keep your hands moisturized.
Whenever you do the dishes, or exposing your hands to a lot of water, be sure to wear gloves. Try using a cream like olive oil, coconut oil or Shea butter under your gloves for a moisture treatment.
